Are Lead Team still around
03/04/2025 at 2:42 pm #479Following the mass restructure 2 years ago small superstores for the most part no longer have a lead team
Then some stores that used to have 2 or 3 lead managers now only have 1 lead manager
Then some larger stores mostly extras seem to have 2 lead managers on days and 1 on nights so 3 total
Not sure about other stores but weirdly enough my store 2 years ago as part of the restructure lost our dotcom and night lead manager and we then had only one lead manager with shift leaders being added to replace the 2 leads we lost
But we have in the last year had a second lead manager back on day shift (they are in charge of days as a whole not dotcom like the one they got rid of was) and we have also had a night lead back.
Personally I don’t think it’s much difference now we have a second lead manager back on days than it was when we was running with just the one lead manager on days
However nights in our store was terrible once the lead was made redundant and definitely suffered.
We lost the night lead and had 2 shift leaders instead on nights to replace them but it was a complete mess as the 2 night team managers wouldn’t really work as a team or communicate with each other and the rotas and online training quickly become a mess and the 2 team managers when they was both in kept taking each others colleagues leaving the other one with not enough colleagues to fill then the new shift leaders mostly filled aisles rather than checking up on the night colleagues from what I’ve heard (the day lead was the line manager of the 2 night managers but they didn’t see the 2 night managers that often and when they did they didn’t speak to them for long as they was mostly busy sorting out stuff to do with days instead of nights)So the night operation for over a year after the lead was made redundant was basically just full of the holidays being a mess and the 2 night managers not getting enough colleagues in (especially on the 2 nights each of them didn’t work) leaving the other night manager who was in with the problem of not having enough colleagues to complete the delivery for the department the other night manager was in charge of.
A few of us on days did speak to the day lead about this but they always brushed it off and wouldn’t do much about it as they claimed to be busy sorting out things to do with the day operation.
We now have a night lead back and the 2 night team managers now seem to work better together and the lead has been making sure they plan rotas appropriately so that when it’s the managers night off the other manager doesn’t have the problem of not having enough colleagues in. And now the night operation seems to be much smoother with a night lead back.
However it’s very confusing as we have gone from 1 night lead and 2 night team managers to 2 night team managers and 2 night shift leaders to 1 night lead 2 night team managers and 2 night shift leaders which the shift leaders fill for the majority of their shift (apparently the night lead makes the shift leaders do a bit more shift leader related duties than what they did when we didn’t have a night lead but they still seem fill aisles quite a lot of the time)
So it seems a bit odd that nights now have 2 shift leaders that didn’t use to exist 2 years ago with both earning over £32,000 (might be a little higher after the August pay rise) who don’t really do much management work and spend the majority of the night filling but earning more money than the colleagues to do the same job
I think some stores night team still have no lead and 2 night team managers and 2 night shift leaders but not sure the point of that either considering a newly appointed night lead would still be on roughly £18,000 less that what it costs to have 2 shift leaders which I guess head office have looked at it as that for 18k extra a year in some stores they can have 2 shift leaders instead of 1 lead
But then in reality it would run better with a lead instead of 2 shift leaders and a £18k year saving which could be used for extra night colleagues/money saved for the business rather than spending £18k extra for 2 shift leaders instead of a lead and in stores like mine with a night lead they would avoid spending roughly £65,000 for 2 shift leaders to fill aisles like the colleagues do. However I mustn’t complain considering the fact they brought a night lead back to our store which has made my mornings much more relaxed when I come in at 7am and nights hand over a completed shop to me unlike the mess it was last year.
But yes lead team do still exist in some stores still but if a store has a lead team whether that’s 1 or 3 managers it seems to vary store to store as to what they have
