Staff in Tesco Newtownabbey were told last night that nonfood and ambient staff would no long have a job on nights and are being moved to new hours 3pm to 12am or look for jobs in other stores. What is the point in the union they do nothing for the staff and didn’t even have a Rep present for us to ask any questions or info about what’s happening.

The same happened at my store last year, No night fill on grocery, only fresh. Our staff were given basically no information for months, we were just told that grocery would move to a twilight fill but fresh would stay on nights. It’s not gone well, the grocery delivery is never completed, the shop floor is a disgrace every day and over the Christmas period there was so much stock left unworked in the warehouse we barely had room to put the next days grocery delivery when it turned up at 7am. The union were useless as normal, they gave us no help, and no information whatsoever. In my opinion Tesco should have offered redundancy but they somehow got away with it. I was surprised by how many night staff just accepted it and didn’t try to fight it. My advice to you all is to fight it, refuse to move and hold firm, don’t let them walk all over you.

Strange how no redundancy was offered. Nights to days is classed as a major change

@davethebrave I was told because they aren’t changing the whole shift meaning fresh is staying they don’t have to offer redundancy which I think is bull shit. So many of us work night because of family commitments and have some staff members that have 20 years service under their belts it’s a joke and when we were told not one member of the union was there to help explain to use were we stand.

They aren’t changing the whole shift but they are changing YOURS. If they want to play that game then they will have to accommodate colleagues who want to stay on nights in fresh surly

The reps can only answer your questions if they have the answers . The union cannot stop Tesco making operational changes but can make sure you’ve representation to be treated fairly and within the guidelines of policy and employment law. And that will happen once we have all the relevant information. Usdaw has now entered into negotiations with the company . This will take time. And I’m sure if your reps are asked they will be there for you

Think its being presented as optional, we would like you to move to 3-12 and we will give you a buy out of premiums if you do but its not mandatory thus avoiding redundancy. Presume Tesco is hoping a lot of night colleagues will willingly move to 3-12 shifts. Unsure what would happen if everyone dug their heals in and said no thanks i will stay where I am.

Also love to know how they busy stores will deliver filled stores in Dec 26 when customers will stop workers every few minutes asking where something is or can they go and open up another till.

Yes this was how it was presented in my store, optional for everyone and as people leave their hours will be absorbed back into twilight shift. Store manager didnt sound to keen on people leaving nights to do a twilight shift either

To many store managers come from stores were twilights works they love the control but it doesn’t work in every shop I knew it wouldn’t work in our store and 12 months later it’s never filled i shop in there
