A neighbouring store to mines has changed grocery night fill to twilight. Apparently no offer of redundancy just take some compensation for losing the premiums or leave if you aren’t happy. It is rumoured to being a trial before it moves on to other stores. I was in a similar position about 5 years ago and there was the offer of redundancy. Have the rules changed? Can they do this? Any one with any knowledge on this?
04/03/2025 at 2:16 pm #416Surely it would be the whole nightshift and not just ‘grocery’ seen as this new schedular is getting relaunched shortly as we’ll not have a set department, I’d want my full redundancy if they tried to move me of my nightshift contract.
04/03/2025 at 4:17 pm #417Apparently that’s what’s happening in a neighbouring store. No offer of redundancy just a payment to make up for loss of premiums. With the premium for nights not having changed much in the last 10 years it can’t be a huge saving. I agree with you I would go for redundancy if it was offered.
09/03/2025 at 4:01 pm #418I think it depends if you’re on a newer contract or not for starters. If you are on one of the older ones unless the length of contract offered is exactly the same in terms of number of hours offered and the time of day/ night worked are extremely similar they cannot not offer redundancy. Employment law hasn’t changed so why would the offer of redundancy. When i had to re-do my availability a couple of years ago I was exactly the same as the hours I already worked. Give them a inch they’ll take a mile.
09/03/2025 at 4:05 pm #419For example I dont think they could make you do 4pm – 1am if you are contracted to do a 10pm – 7am (on a older contract) but maybe a 7pm – 4am could be enforced.
09/03/2025 at 8:40 pm #420This is precisely what’s happening in my store, perhaps mine is the store you are referring to. Grocery will no longer be filled at night, it’s moving to twilights, fresh and frozen is staying on nights. They are able to get away with not offering redundancy because there is still technically a night shift but you have to move to fresh or frozen. Clearly in reality they could not possibly give everybody from grocery hours on fresh so most will inevitably end up having to move to twilights. No redundancy, there’s the choice between a single lump sum pay out or protected pay for either 18 months or 2 years…it’s not been made clear which it is. It’s pretty outrageous that no redundancy has been offered and I think if someone really wanted to challenge it they would likely win the case and get the payout but Tesco know most people will just go along with it to keep a job. This is the only information we have been given, we don’t know how many hours are available on fresh, we don’t know what the shift times will be, 1-10pm and 3-12pm have been bandied about but thats it. Just been told grocery is going to be filled on days, there’s no redundancy and the affected staff were given availability forms to fill out. So far its been handled badly to say the least.

09/03/2025 at 9:01 pm #423I”d definitely be challenging that for sure. They’re trying to stitch people up to save on a payout. When they’ve changed to twilights from nights before they offered redundancy or suitable alternative – forcing people to go to twilights is a huge change in hours and isn’t a suitable/ reasonable alternative.
09/03/2025 at 9:04 pm #424Plus what happens if everyone on grocery applied to stay on nights? Wouldn’t work out at all.
10/03/2025 at 8:34 am #425Clearly not everyone will be able to stay on nights, the vast majority will have to move to twilights so I agree that redundancy should have been on the table but it’s not. At some point in the future fresh will also be moved onto days and at that point I cannot see a way they can avoid offering redundancy, moving grocery to twilights removes the bulk of the potential redundancy bill for when it does arise so that’s why they are doing it this way. Unless the affected grocery staff challenge them they will get away with it but as I said before most staff are too afraid or do not feel like they are in a position to refuse in fear of losing their jobs.
10/03/2025 at 9:53 am #426Are these busy extra stores that are moving grocery from nightshift to twilight?
10/03/2025 at 12:11 pm #427No, relatively small superstore with Dot com in my case
10/03/2025 at 2:15 pm #428Are these changes stored specific or will it be across the board?
10/03/2025 at 2:15 pm #429Are these changes store specific or will it be across the board?
10/03/2025 at 3:53 pm #430As far as I am aware its a store specific change, I’ve not heard of any other stores locally doing it
