usdaw consults suggest shift leads stripped – moving 75% 25% job role less admin more moving stock
21/01/2026 at 5:40 pm #618??
21/01/2026 at 7:31 pm #619Shift leaders don’t do any admin. They hold duty phone and run the shop by organising colleagues across the shop floor. Even Admin colleagues don’t do much admin now. Managers do everything including managing absence on their own portal.
That is the only thing what makes me believe its admin going. Although I have heard a reduction on Customer Service Desk and Self Serve hours could be coming
and didn’t the shift leader role change last year by making them fill more? if they are making them fill even more why are they getting paid 50% more than actual filling staff who will be doing the same job
21/01/2026 at 7:46 pm #620Can’t see how they can get rid of SL in express my shop would be closed even with step ups
21/01/2026 at 7:49 pm #621The whole point of Shift Leaders was to free up Line Managers from duty so they could focus on admin.
Shift leaders have never done admin. Unless you count EPWs but thats not really admin, its a Duty Manager task.
21/01/2026 at 7:59 pm #622That’s true hence why the name was changed in 2016-2017. But if SL go and express managers go to multi store structure. It just won’t work. In my express store shift leaders do most office jobs and shop floor. Payroll, Daily Cash routine’s, ordering change, change runs, scratch cards, G4S , updating forecourt eye, comms, click to order, EPW, replying to store emails etc..

21/01/2026 at 8:10 pm #625I am in an Admin group and a lot do seem to think its them who will be sacrificed. The admin assistant in our store is always on shop floor these days anyway. So its probably been heading this way since everything moved to the app.
22/01/2026 at 8:51 am #626I think admin will go eventually but not just now in large stores whilst we still have physical personnel files. Plus why give us the new training, new slide deck for Warm welcome if getting rid a few months later. I am also on the admin chat but it surprises me that some only do a couple of hours in admin. If they followed the Admin role pack I don’t know how this would be the case However what I do think is managers etc think admin do nothing and may be better on shop floor and not let them do what admins are meant to be doing. What they don’t get is that it probably admins that keep them legal with regards to RTW and GDPR etc. What will be will be.
25/01/2026 at 9:17 am #627My store manager doesn’t think its going to be anything major just a rejigging of hours. So admin going to 3 hours per day, stock control going to 4 hours etc
If thats the case the will obviously just move people around so that they do multiple departments a day. Which is where things have been going anyway, for those that don’t follow the app that is..
26/01/2026 at 12:08 pm #628Hearing it could be dotcom focused. A complete overhaul of everything from manager structure to shift leader roles being reduced to 60% picking.
26/01/2026 at 3:07 pm #631Probably nothing in it, but there has always been rumblings from other stores that they are going to restructure the team Manager role again
26/01/2026 at 3:10 pm #632Stock and Admin manager role isn’t needed. That position could very easily be absorbed into the Non Food Managers responsibilities. That alone would save the store 40k a year.
26/01/2026 at 5:30 pm #633That’s the way it’s been in our store for a few years now. Stock and Admin, GM, PI and Clothing all under 1 manager.
26/01/2026 at 5:48 pm #634Possible for the stock and admin managers/ operations managers to go.
New structure:
1x front end
2x day replen managers/ 3 for extras
1x lead
1x SMLead manager to get all legal stuff, audits etc
Replen managers look after own SRM and SC routines through departmentsEither that or lose lead managers again
26/01/2026 at 6:00 pm #635Our store only has 3 stock controllers. They could easily be handed over to the relevant department manager they stock take on, likewise with the merch teams, they should be under nights. Stock Manager is the easiest one to ditch if they are restructuring management. Job 14 moving to fresh managers was probably the beginning of the end for stock manager tbh
I’ve always thought it was odd how our front end manager has 68 staff but the stock manager has 7… in terms of balance its not fair really is it.
I think the changes must be management again because there isn’t any floor staff to cut.
